Master IELTS Writing Tasks 1 & 2

Learn how to master and write an efficient and high band scoring task 1 and task 2.

IELTS Writing is one of the most challenging modules of the test, and students struggle a lot to get good bands(or 7 Bands at least). Task 2 is more difficult, as you have to stick to the topic while presenting your ideas in about 250-300 words.

Here are some strategies that you can use to get desired results.

1.Spend time on planning and organizing your essays. 

One of the biggest mistakes that students make is to straightway start writing the response when they see the essay. This is not advised. Planning to write a coherent essay will never waste your time. While you are IELTS writing, you won’t have to stop and think about the next point because you would have already made a blueprint of the essay.

2.Familiarize yourself with different types of essays. 

Once you practice writing at least 2-3 essays of each type, you will be able to write more confidently in the test. 

3.Understand the task properly.

Something as simple as reading the instructions will give you clear ideas of how to approach an essay. For example: if the question asks “Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?” but you just discuss advantages & disadvantages in the essay, this means your task response is weak.

Usually, you should follow the following approach to write an essay in IELTS

Now testing might be the last step, but it is very important. Testing means checking your essay for grammatical, structural, and language errors.

You might have written a very good essay, but in the pressure of the exam, you might have misspelled a word or two, or forgotten a comma or semicolon. Or even written a wrong tense (for eg. using did/did not with a past participle)

So why take chances? Go and proofread every paragraph and line of your essay. Leave no scope of error.

4.Describe changes and bring attention. 

For writing task 1, it is important to bring the examiner’s attention to the significant changes happening in graph/pie chart/table/diagram, etc. So use words or phrases like “The given data shows…” “the noticeable shift/increase/decline could be observed in… “

Besides, use synonyms to describe repetitive increases and decreases, like elevate, plummet, escalate, drop. Etc.

Usage of adjectives is highly recommended, like minimal, moderate, enormous, astronomical, mere… etc.

5. Practice writing overviews. 

Overview for Academic Task 1 and Conclusion for Task 2 are very similar and important.

Overviews are usually 20-30 words or 1-2 lines summary of the most prominent trend mentioned in data of the graph, chart, table, or diagram. It should be designed in such a way that the reader gets the gist of the whole content just by reading the overview.

An overview can be placed after the introduction or in the last.

Conclusion for task 2 should describe the crux of the body paragraphs in the essay.
